Honours Thesis: The Ethics of Labour-Hiring Algorithms

This research explores the ethical and economic consequences of using automated algorithms and predictive analytics within the South African labour market. It specifically examines whether these technologies serve to improve recruitment efficiency or if they inadvertently entrench historical inequalities through biased data and "black box" processes. By analysing a case study of the digital recruitment platform Leap.ly, the text evaluates how candidate selection varies across different demographic groups and educational backgrounds. The findings suggest that while algorithmic hiring carries risks of statistical discrimination, it can also be structured to support substantive equality by reducing subjective human prejudice. Ultimately, the work highlights the urgent need for transparency and accountability as artificial intelligence increasingly replaces traditional human decision-making in the workforce. I won the departmental prize for the best research conducted in 2017 for this research.

Competitor Analysis

This involved carrying out market research around the competitiveness of this organisation's offerings across several dimensions, and weighting their relative market importance.

Design & User Testing Processes

This involved the creation of a template for the design and user testing processes for all programmes at the organisation, ensuring that all aspects of design were thoroughly accounted for to ensure quality and targeted feedback from testers and users. This is part of forming a standard operating procedure to ensure uniform quality across all programmes.

Self-Mastery

A module, originally built to plug into a workplace development programme to lead students on a cognitive-behavioural journey to help them develop their self-mastery, enhancing wellbeing and workplace resilience. Drawing on a behaviourist approach, the process emphasises observable behaviours and well-established therapeutic techniques, ranging from traditional behaviour therapy and positive psychology to mindfulness and acceptance.

Automating Recruitment Analytics

Between 2017 and 2019, I developed automated R-based systems to streamline data-generation and reporting workflows for Leap.ly, a South African recruitment platform handling nearly 50,000 candidate records. By mechanising data cleansing and the production of descriptive statistics, this project significantly reduced "human toil," enhanced data quality (accuracy and timeliness), and provided resident firms with transparent, real-time insights into candidate progression and demographic trends.
